Msizi James

Msizi James

Msizi James, born in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, 29 years ago, is a DJ/MC/Radio Host currently co-hosting the 5FM Drive-time show with Thando “Thabooty” Thabete. With his signature loud mouth that’s bound to keep you entertained on the airwaves and his reputation for being affectionately known to his peers as the “King of Commercial”, he is one of the most versatile and hard working entertainers of the next generation.

His start in the industry seemed to come by fate after winning an East Coast Radio talent competition in 2014. Their search for new talent on twitter found them this young bright-eyed radio jockey and they quickly jumped on the chance to offer him a slot hosting the early breakfast show every weekday 4-6AM. It wasn’t long before his natural ability to engage with his listeners began to shine and he was offered the chance to host the popular weekend breakfast show every Saturday & Sunday. In 2016 he was cast as the presenter of The Big Brand TV show on ETV.

In May 2017 Msizi was offered prime time slot at 5FM and became the youngest person and the first person from Durban to host a drive show on a national radio station. Msizi Is also the new host of an Educational TV Game show called Hidden Science, which will air in 2018. Msizi is also the owner of a branding and marketing company called The Brandlab.

Msizi’s skill-set is not limited to entertaining thousands of radio listeners on a daily basis though. He also spends his weekends playing deep house and commercial music for club and festival goers across the nation. Having only gotten into DJ’ing by chance at a nightclub in Durban a few years ago when he was asked to fill-in for a resident DJ who happened to miss his set, he has since developed a deep love affair with the 1’s & 2’s and his energy behind them is evidence of this. His style of music is described as “feel good” – the type of music that makes you forget about your issues and forces you to lose yourself in the rhythm. With his background in radio he brings a keen ear to song selection and plays music that’s guaranteed to get the crowd going. This has also worked in making him extremely comfortable behind the microphone and has allowed him to host some of Durban’s biggest festivals and the country’s biggest concerts namely hosting The Lumineers, Chris Brown, even Michael Bublé.

Although his journey has been fairly short, he has managed to grow in leaps and bounds to get to where he is today and it’s safe to say the story of Msizi James has only just begun. His life’s motto is – Until further notice, celebrate everything.

Loyiso Madinga – USA

Loyiso Madinga - USA

CURRENTLY BASED IN THE USA

All the way from a place so rural Frodo wouldn’t reach it, Loyiso Madinga has come a long way to becoming one of the sharpest young comedians in SA. Since 2012 he has been honing his craft with his smart but highly relatable style of humour. It’s already proving to be a hit with audiences everywhere.

His dedication to standup quickly made him a regular on the SA comedy circuit. Loyiso then became an Emmy finalist as a writer and performer on the two-time Emmy Award finalist satire show, Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola and the SAFTA nominated hit sketch comedy show, The Bantu Hour.

Considering he left a promising career in advertising, that his father didn’t approve of, for the stage life, which his father approves even less of, he keeps making the right moves. Loyiso has toured locally with Trevor Noah on the Nationwild Show and performed at festivals around the world including the Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland, Busan Comedy Festival in S. Korea and the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival.

All this lead to his successful one man show, Born Free-ish, that sold out the world-class Goliath Comedy Club for four evenings. Not bad for someone who grew up fetching his bath water from the river.

From a now-you-know-you’re-definitely-lost village in the Eastern Cape he has his sights set on the world stage and his passion for comedy is taking him a long way from home.

Donovan Goliath

Donovan Goliath

Parents who name their kid Donovan David Goliath (true story) must surely expect that the internal conflicts caused by giving their son such a name would lead him into comedy one day. And, when he leaves a lucrative advertising job for a full time career in comedy, they only have themselves to blame. But comedy audiences are happy about it, even if his folks are not.

Donovan David Goliath’s bedtime stories about growing up in the Transkei as a coloured boy who looks white but speaks fluent Xhosa are more funny than scary. In fact, it’s these life experiences that launched him into comedy in the first place. It all began on the 26th September 2010 where he did his first ever 4min 35sec set at the Comedy Underground in Melville.

People laughed and rolled on the floor and there were rear ends lying everywhere. This inspired him to keep writing and performing harder, better, faster, stronger. And it’s been a great ride since. It’s safe to say that most of his success thus far has been fueled by his dad’s motto: “Work the hardest. Be yourself.” His act is based around insightful storytelling and simple truths using various characters and impersonations.

As a relatively new comic on the circuit, he has rocked stages and fesses all over the country including Blacks Only, Soweto Comedy Festival, 99% Xhosa Comedy, 99% Zulu Comedy, Jou Ma Se Comedy (Cape Town), Mzansi Festival, Kings & Queens of Comedy, Three Kings Comedy and completed a 51 show, 3 month run for LOL at Gold Reef City.

He was also nominated in the ‘Newcomer Of The Year Category’ at the 2012 Comics Choice Awards and in the Blackberry Breakthrough category in 2013. Donovan has been a contestant in Strictly Come Dancing on SABC 3 in 2014’s 7th season and recently in 2015, co-presented ‘The Great SA Bake Off’ for BBC South Africa.
